Review of the Prosperity Mine Environmental Impact Statement
The Center for Science and Public Participation (CSP2) in Victoria, BC, on behalf of the Tsilhqot'in National Government and the Williams Lake Indian Band, retained Stratus Consulting to review the environmental impact statement for the proposed Prosperity Gold-Copper Mine outside of Williams Lake, BC. The mine proponent, Taseko Mines Ltd, proposes a large open pit mine with onsite ore processing and millions of tons of tailings placed in an impoundment in a river valley. As part of the operation, Taseko would drain an existing productive trout lake and replace it with a constructed lake upstream of the mine operations. Taseko and their engineers concluded that this operation would not cause adverse environmental effects, even with little or no water treatment or stormwater management.
Stratus Consulting scientists, including Cam Wobus, Connie Travers, Ann Maest, and Jamie Holmes, reviewed the impact statement and its underlying data. They concluded that Taseko had not adequately addressed water management issues, particularly in the event of drought or extreme weather events. The Stratus Consulting report was sent to the environmental panel reviewing the mine application; the approval process for the Properity Mine is currently on hold as both sides argue their cases.
